About
Corydoras elegans breaks the rule that makes a cory a cory. Seriously Fish records that 'unlike the majority of congeners' it 'tends to spend a fair amount of time away from the substrate, often forming groups in midwater'. Buy it expecting a bottom crew and you get a small, slim, restless catfish that hangs in open water like a tetra - which changes what the tank has to provide: swimming room across the middle as well as clean sand underneath. The second surprise is the sexing. Most Corydoras are separated only by the female's broader body, but in C. elegans, Seriously Fish notes, 'males possess a more intense colour pattern than females, with a greater proportion of dark markings on the body and dorsal-fin', so a mixed group is readable at a glance. It sits in a knot of near-identical small species - C. bilineatus, C. gracilis, C. nanus, C. napoensis, C. nijsseni and C. undulatus - and C. nanus has its own entry in this catalogue, so read the label twice. The 2024 revision of the subfamily moved it from Corydoras into the resurrected genus Gastrodermus, so older books and most shop labels still call it Corydoras elegans — same fish, same care.
Care
A group of at least six, 23-25 °C, soft to moderately hard water and fine sand. Give it length rather than height: this is the cory that actually uses the middle of the tank, and a cramped nano wastes the one thing that makes it interesting. Feed sinking food deliberately - it forages the bottom like any cory even though it does not stay there. Males carry the stronger pattern, so buy a mixed group rather than picking the prettiest fish in the bag.
Diet
Foraging omnivore. Sinking dried food plus frozen or live bloodworm and tubifex; a varied diet keeps it in condition.
