Sailfin Pleco
Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps
Loricariidae

About
The sailfin pleco is the giant hiding behind a 6 cm shop label. Sold as an algae cleaner, it grows to around 50 cm and can live fifteen to twenty years, ending up a heavily armoured, waste-producing tank-buster that needs several hundred litres to itself. The huge flag-like dorsal fin and dark leopard blotching make an adult a genuinely spectacular fish, but only in a tank built for it. It is a facultative air-breather that survives conditions which would kill most fish, which is precisely why released specimens have gone invasive across Florida, Mexico and South-East Asia. Never release one.
Care
Plan for a 50 cm fish from day one: 680 L or more with a 180 cm footprint, heavy-duty external filtration and generous weekly water changes. Feed vegetables and algae wafers daily rather than trusting it to live off tank algae. Peaceful towards other fish, but it grazes soft plants to shreds and shoves decor around, so use bogwood, rock and pipes rather than a delicate aquascape.
Diet
Feed it properly rather than expecting it to clean the tank: sinking algae wafers plus daily blanched vegetables, with driftwood available for fibre.
