About

The zebra pleco is a small black-and-white Hypancistrus endemic to a short stretch of the rio Xingu in Brazil, and the most expensive fish most aquarists will ever seriously consider. Brazil banned its export in 2004 and CITES added the species to Appendix II at CoP19 in 2022, so every legal specimen is captive bred and priced accordingly, commonly a few hundred euros each. Despite the pleco shape it is essentially carnivorous, not an algae crew member, and it wants hot, fast, oxygen-saturated water with a narrow cave of its own.

Care

Warm water at 27-29 C, strong flow and heavy aeration, a sand bed and one narrow cave per fish. Feed meaty sinking food after dark: this is a carnivore, not a cleaner. Territorial with its own kind and with other cave-dwellers: keep one, or at most a pair with plenty of broken sight lines, as the only bottom fish, alongside quiet mid-water species. Buy captive-bred stock with paperwork and expect to pay for it.

Diet

Primarily carnivorous. Frozen bloodworm, chopped mussel and prawn, and high-protein sinking pellets; vegetables are barely touched.
