Green Neon Rasbora

About

The green neon rasbora is a 2 cm danionin from clear, shaded forest streams in the Ataran basin of Myanmar and the Ranong and Phang Nga provinces of peninsular Thailand, where it lives in loose groups of twenty to fifty. In soft, mature water it lights up a startling lime green and is one of the brightest nano fish available for a planted aquarium. It shares its species name with Botia kubotai, the polka dot loach, and is otherwise nothing like it — check the genus before you buy, because the loach reaches 15 cm and will treat this fish as food. Tiny, peaceful and easily out-competed, it needs stable water and neighbours that leave it something to eat.

Care

Keep at least ten in a mature, densely planted 60 cm tank at 23-25 °C with soft, slightly acidic water and gentle flow. Far too small to house with anything that could swallow it; ideal with other nano fish, dwarf shrimp and snails. Feed food small enough for a 2 cm mouth, several times a day.

Diet

Micropredator on zooplankton and small invertebrates; needs powdered dry foods, live or frozen cyclops, baby brine shrimp and small daphnia.
