About

The marble hatchetfish is a tiny, deep-keeled surface dweller from the blackwater streams and flooded forests of the Amazon basin. Named for the mottled marbling along its flanks, it hangs motionless just beneath the surface film and can launch itself out of the water in a gliding leap to escape danger or catch insects, so it is only truly at home in a tightly covered, dimly lit shoal tank.

Care

Keep a shoal of 6+ (ideally 10 or more) in soft, acidic, gently filtered blackwater with floating plants and subdued light. A tight, gap-free lid is essential because startled fish glide clear of the water.

Diet

Insectivorous surface feeder that snaps up small invertebrates from the water film; provide floating dry foods plus regular live or frozen mosquito larvae, Daphnia and Artemia.

Telling males from females

What works for this species, most reliable first.

  • Belly depthA hint only · only on well-fed adults, and only as a comparison

For most tetras, barbs and rasboras this is all there is: a conditioned female is deeper through the belly than a male of the same length.

Frequently asked questions

What tank size does a Marble Hatchetfish need?
A Marble Hatchetfish needs an aquarium of at least 75 litres (19.8 US gallons) with a footprint at least 75 cm (29.5 in) long — for this species, swimming length matters as much as raw volume.
What water parameters does a Marble Hatchetfish need?
Marble Hatchetfish does best at 22–28 °C (71.6–82.4 °F), pH 4.5–7 and a general hardness of 1–12 °dGH.
What group size does a Marble Hatchetfish need?
Marble Hatchetfish is a social species — keep a group of at least 6 so natural behaviour emerges and stress stays low.
Is the Marble Hatchetfish suitable for beginners?
Marble Hatchetfish sits in the middle of the difficulty scale — manageable for a careful beginner who has done the reading, but it has specific needs worth researching first.
