About
A carnivorous bladderwort from the marshes and seepage rocks of southern Asia that aquascapers grow as a fine, wind-swept lawn only a few centimetres tall. Its creeping stolons and rhizoids are studded with microscopic suction bladders that trap protozoa, copepods and other micro-crustaceans, which is where its reputation for danger comes from. Adult shrimp and fish fry are far too large to fit a trap; whether newly hatched shrimplets are ever caught is still argued in the hobby and has never actually been demonstrated, with plant databases reporting no observed harm. It anchors in substrate but will just as readily mat over stone and driftwood, or drift as a floating cushion.
Care
High-tech only: strong light (roughly 50-100 PAR at the substrate), stable injected CO2 at 20-30 mg/l, and soft acidic water — GH 2-6, KH low, pH under 7. Expect heavy melt as it converts from emersed nursery growth, so plant tiny portions into a mature, ammonia-free tank, leave it untouched for six to eight weeks, keep flow gentle so the mat does not lift, and never trim hard down at the base.
