About

Marsilea crenata is a small creeping aquatic fern sold as a foreground carpet: a thin rhizome runs through the substrate and pushes up short stalks, each usually carrying one rounded to spoon-shaped submersed leaflet rarely wider than 5 mm. Aquasabi calls those leaves significantly smaller than the submersed leaves of Marsilea hirsuta, and Tropica and Swell describe the settled result as a close 1-3 cm carpet, well anchored enough to shrug off shrimp and snails. Everything after that is where the plant costs more than the label suggests. Every pot and tissue-culture cup arrives grown emersed, wearing the four-leaf lucky-clover foliage the plant is famous for, and that foliage misrepresents the final look: after planting the emersed leaves die back, and Flowgrow warns that emersed-grown Marsilea often need a longer time to acclimatise before growth restarts as the low single-leaflet form. That stall is the normal course, not a failure. Two failure modes follow it, and neither one is melting. The first is stretching - under insufficient light the stalks lengthen and the leaves return divided into two, three or four lobes, giving a thin field of tall clovers instead of a carpet. The second, which no shop listing mentions, is that the plant reaches for the surface: submersed plants throw long-stalked floating leaves, and the botanical description Flowgrow quotes for M. crenata puts the leaf stalks at up to 30 cm long depending on water depth, with the leaves tending to float. Those floating leaves shade the carpet underneath and have to be cut off repeatedly before the plant gives up making them. The height field here reads 10 cm because Swell's own key-features list says it reaches 3-10 cm+, while the specification table on that same page says 3-5 cm+ - the trade figures do not agree with each other. Light is the other place the easy label slips. Tropica, Swell, Aquasabi and Aquarium Gardens all file the demand as medium, and Aquasabi says the plant copes with relatively little light; Flowgrow's band for the genus is medium to high, and adds that stronger light and injected CO2 produce stronger, more compact growth. Read the low end as survival, not as a carpet. CO2 is genuinely optional - Tropica puts the demand at 0-5 mg/l - but Flowgrow's genus band is 10-40 mg/l, so 'needs no CO2' and 'inject CO2' both sit in the published record. Growth rate is contested the same way: Tropica, Swell and Flowgrow say medium, Aquasabi says slow, and we file it slow because that is what a weeks-long stall followed by an unhurried fill-in actually behaves like. Colour is the one thing light does not control: it stays plain green in any water, with no red form, and neither iron nor lean nitrate will change that - though even the shade is unsettled, since Swell advertises 'bright pale green colours', so do not promise yourself a dark carpet. Rot is real but narrow and thinly evidenced: a single Aquasabi customer review reports that portions planted in the shadow of a tree melted while the rest grew on. Identity is unsettled too. In the shop it stands next to Marsilea hirsuta and is increasingly labelled Marsilea minuta - Tropica's article 010B TC, once sold as crenata, now reads Marsilea minuta on the same page. Flowgrow reports that crenata and minuta form a very variable complex whose species cannot be clearly delimited and may be united, in which case the older name minuta would win (Nagalingum et al. 2007); but the same database, citing APC Plant Finder, also treats minuta as the one small species you can actually pick out, because its leaves stay distinctly smaller even under intensive light. So do not read 'the smallest trade Marsilea' as settled. Be honest about the hard limit as well: Flowgrow states flatly that botanical literature contains no information on how these species differ in their submersed form, so nothing visible in the tank will tell you which one you bought. Emersed there is one clue besides the sporocarps - crenata's four-part clover leaves tend to be hairless or only sparsely hairy, while Australian M. hirsuta has distinctly hairier emersed leaves. Do not mistake it for Glossostigma elatinoides either, whose leaves come in opposite pairs on creeping stems and which this catalogue files as high light with CO2 required. Finally, every number in the water block above comes from Flowgrow's collective Marsilea spp. entry rather than from a species page: Flowgrow's own M. crenata page states plainly that no detailed culture description exists for it.

Care

Split the cup into many small portions and plant them 2-3 cm apart in fine substrate with the rhizome barely covered. Expect the emersed clover leaves to die off and several weeks of nothing before submersed leaves appear. Aim at the upper half of medium light and add CO2 if you have it: dim light will not kill it, it just gives you tall lobed clovers instead of a carpet. Then keep cutting the long-stalked floating leaves it sends to the surface - Flowgrow says it stops producing them after several cuttings, and until then they shade the carpet underneath.

Diet

Feeds through both the rhizome roots and the leaves, so it works in soil and in inert sand with root tabs; Aquasabi notes it develops best with a complete supply of nutrients, including via the substrate. Flowgrow's column figures are genus-level and wide (NO3 10-50, PO4 0.1-3, K 5-30, Fe 0.01-0.5 mg/l).
