Dwarf Hygrophila
Hygrophila polysperma
Acanthaceae

About
Dwarf hygrophila is a fast-growing stem plant from South and Southeast Asia, prized as one of the most forgiving background and midground plants in the hobby. It thrives without CO2 or intense light, sending up light-green shoots that quickly draw down excess nutrients and starve out algae, which makes it a reliable stabiliser for freshly planted low-tech tanks. Note that its vigour makes it a listed noxious weed in several regions, so check local rules before buying.
Care
Plant stems in substrate a few centimetres apart, give low to moderate light, and trim tops regularly to keep it bushy. No CO2 needed; grows fast and mops up nutrients to suppress algae.
Diet
Feeds through both roots and leaves; responds to column dosing of nitrate, phosphate and iron, while an enriched substrate fuels its rapid growth.
