About

A feathery stem plant from tropical Asia whose fine leaves sit in whorls around the stem, giving it the look of Cabomba without any of the temperament. It is the classic beginner substitute for that genus: it copes with low light, tolerates a skipped fertiliser dose and needs no CO2 system at all. Growth is genuinely fast, fast enough that a handful of stems works as a living nitrate sponge while a new tank finds its feet, soaking up ammonia and nitrate before algae can claim them. The trade-off is a haircut roughly every week once it settles in. Note that it is a listed noxious weed in the United States and a problem plant in several other regions, so trimmings belong in the compost and never in a pond, ditch or drain.

Care

Push single stems into the background about 5 cm apart, run 6-10 hours of low to medium light, and cut it back by half before it reaches the surface. Replant the tops and the stumps will branch on their own. Brighter light keeps the whorls tight and can blush the tips red; weak light makes it stretch and drop lower leaves. Dispose of clippings in the bin, never in natural water.
