About

Christmas moss is a compact aquascaping moss from Asia whose overlapping side branches droop in tiered rows, giving each frond the silhouette of a little fir tree. Like other mosses it is an epiphyte, so it is tied or glued onto wood and stone rather than planted in substrate, where it slowly forms a dense, textured green carpet prized for shrimp tanks and detailed hardscapes.

Care

Attach it to wood or rock and keep light low to moderate with gentle steady flow to stop detritus settling in the fronds. No CO2 is needed, though injection and light dosing make growth denser; trim to keep a tidy shape.

Diet

Takes all its nutrients from the water column through its fronds; harbours biofilm and micro-organisms that graze shrimp and fry rely on. Benefits from occasional liquid fertiliser but survives without.

Frequently asked questions

What water parameters does a Christmas Moss need?
Christmas Moss does best at 15–28 °C (59–82.4 °F), pH 5.5–8 and a general hardness of 3–18 °dGH.
Where should Christmas Moss be placed in the aquarium?
Christmas Moss works best attached to wood or rock, not planted in the substrate and reaches around 5 cm.
Is the Christmas Moss suitable for beginners?
Yes — Christmas Moss is one of the easier species to keep and forgives typical first-tank mistakes, as long as the aquarium is cycled and maintained.
