About

Crinum thaianum is the largest bulb plant in the hobby, and the first thing to understand is that the catalogue photo undersells it badly. Tropica's listed height of 20-30 cm is not the plant's size - it is the average height two months after planting. A settled bulb sends up smooth, straight, bright green strap leaves about 2.5 cm wide and 60-200 cm long; in a normal 50 cm tank they reach the surface and then lie flat across it, shading everything beneath. That surface takeover, not the footprint, is why it needs a big aquarium, and it is also why we rate it harder than the trade does: no single step in growing it is fiddly, but it outgrows most tanks, it wants 8 cm of nutrient-rich substrate and root tabs under it, and its one common failure is not recoverable. A happy plant is easy to read: the bulb is firm and pale, sitting proud of the substrate like an onion half-pushed into sand, and a new leaf is always rising through the centre of the crown. An unhappy one is just as legible. A bulb gone soft and mushy at the base, with leaves detaching at the neck, has rotted - almost always because it was buried - and that is fatal, not recoverable. Under-lit, it neither melts nor stretches; it idles, pushing one short leaf every few weeks, never reaching the surface, never making offsets, while the long-lived old leaves sit there accumulating black beard algae. Short of substrate nutrients, the leaves go yellow or translucent and growth stalls. A newly bought plant that sheds its old leaves has not failed - this species cannot be grown emersed, so those are submersed leaves lost to transport and root damage, and it will rebuild them from the bulb's reserves as long as the bulb stays firm and white. A plant that has been moved sulks for six to eight weeks while it regrows its huge root system. In the shop it is confused with Crinum calamistratum, whose narrow leaves twist into corkscrews - straight ribbon means thaianum, curls mean calamistratum. Crinum natans is bubbled and puckered along its length but not curled. Vallisneria looks similar from across the room but has no bulb, spreads by runners, and wants the opposite treatment: divide and spread Vallisneria, leave Crinum alone. Blister-packed "aquarium onion bulbs" are usually dry amaryllis relatives that rot within weeks; a genuine one arrives with living roots and green leaves already attached. Wild populations are IUCN Endangered with roughly 1% of the original stock left, and bulb collection for the aquarium trade is one of the named causes - so buy a nursery-grown pot rather than a loose bulb.

Care

Never bury the bulb, and read the sources' disagreement the safe way round: Tropica, Aquasabi and the Dennerle lineage all say leave two thirds of the bulb standing above the substrate, while the British and American shops say one third. Plant it with two thirds showing and treat one third as the absolute floor - only the roots and the base plate go in. Give it 8 cm or more of nutrient-rich substrate with root tabs under the bulb; this is a heavy root feeder, and water-column dosing alone shows up as yellow or translucent leaves and stalled growth. Light is the one figure the sources genuinely contest: Tropica and Aquasabi rate it low, Dennerle, Maidenhead Aquatics and Aquatic Arts all say medium to very high, so we rate it medium and you should plan for medium. It survives in shade but only idles there - it will not die, it will simply never fill the tank or throw an offset. CO2 is not required to keep it alive, but it is not pointless either: growth is faster with it and flowering is far more likely, and it is what keeps a brightly lit tank out of trouble. Strong light without CO2 is the one lighting mistake that costs you leaves - they die back from the tips and collect black beard algae, which the long-lived foliage attracts anyway. Put it where the water moves, near the filter outlet, and choose its spot once: every move costs about two months of growth. Remove whole leaves at the base rather than trimming them across, because a cut leaf never resumes growing from the cut. The leaves are tough enough that cichlids, goldfish and other plant-wreckers leave them alone.
