About

Rotala wallichii is a delicate Southeast Asian stem plant carrying whorls of fine, needle-like leaves along slender stems, giving it a soft, feathery silhouette in the aquascape. It is one of the more demanding red stem plants: only with strong light, injected CO2 and generous fertilisation will the shoot tips flush the vivid pink, red and orange tones it is prized for, while in poorer conditions it stays pale, grows leggy and melts easily. Planted in dense groups it forms a wispy, colourful accent for the midground and background.

Care

A high-tech plant for experienced aquascapers: provide strong light, pressurised CO2, rich column and substrate ferts, and very stable parameters. Plant many stems close together and trim and replant the tops to keep it dense.

Diet

Feeds from both the water column and its roots; needs steady nitrate, phosphate, iron and micronutrients, and reacts to sudden nutrient or CO2 swings by melting.
