About
Cryptocoryne usteriana is the giant of the genus and the only crypt in this catalogue whose published tolerance begins in genuinely hard, buffered water. It is a Philippine endemic from the bedrock stream tributaries of Guimaras, and a settled plant is unmistakable: strap-shaped blades 40–70 cm long and 3–5 cm wide, up to 8 cm in the broad-leaved clones, with a deeply embossed, hammered surface. Treat the catalogue photo as conditional. The dark green-to-bronze upper side and the wine-red underside only appear with medium light and real fertilisation; in a dim, unfed tank the same plant does not die, it simply stays plain green, stalls near the size you bought it at and never reaches half its potential. What separates it from every other crypt here is one number: the reference database gives a carbonate-hardness floor of 7 °dKH, where our wendtii and parva start at 1. That number is also the failure mode nobody prints on a pot label. In soft, acidic water — the standard aquascaping tank at KH 1–3 under CO2 — usteriana does not die outright, it sulks: new leaves come in short, thin and pale, the plant never leaves the size it arrived at, and the crown is the first thing to rot at the next disturbance. If your tap water is soft, buy a different crypt. Turn that around and you have the plant's best use: both German reference sources stamp it barschfest, Dennerle recommends it outright for Malawi and Tanganyika tanks, and in a hard-water cichlid tank the water it wants is already there and the fish leave the leathery leaves alone. Standing at the shop shelf, three checks separate it. The mid-sized crypts (C. wendtii, C. beckettii, C. undulata, C. walkeri) are 15–30 cm rosettes — the whole plant is shorter than one usteriana leaf — and all of them are content in soft water. The balansae crypt (C. crispatula) is the other tall crypt on the shelf and also likes harder water, but its leaves are narrow ribbons 1–2 cm wide and it carries no cichlid-proof rating. The broad hammered blade is what identifies usteriana in the pot. Expect it to melt. After planting, after a move, after any abrupt change, the leaves go soft and dissolve; in the wild its habitat dries out each summer and it sheds every leaf, regrowing from the rhizome when the monsoon returns. Leave the rhizome in the substrate and new submersed leaves push in two to four weeks. The one avoidable melt is root starvation — a 60 cm leaf is fed from below, so bury root tabs and renew them every 2–3 months. Where the sources disagree we resolved toward the more demanding reading, and the requirement is genuinely contested. Tropica and Aquasabi rate the light demand low, but Dennerle says it grows ideally at medium lighting and every source ties both the colour and the full size to good light, so we carry it as medium. The same for CO2: European growers agree it is optional and it will grow with none, but Dennerle's own copy assumes a low dose and US retail lists it as recommended, so we carry it as beneficial rather than none — expect a slower, smaller plant without it, not a dead one. Flowgrow's 15 °C tolerance floor is the figure it prints across the genus, and it is not a condition a Philippine lowland plant is documented to grow in, so we follow AQUAMOOS's 20–29 °C instead. In the shop it is systematically confused with C. aponogetifolia: the two were treated as one species until Bogner separated them in 1983, and much of the stock sold as usteriana is really aponogetifolia. Usteriana has the broader, ovate-lanceolate, less deeply hammered leaf with a red underside when well fed; aponogetifolia is almost linear, strongly bullate, always green beneath, and passes a metre. Note the trap — an underfed usteriana is also green underneath, so a green leaf back in a dim tank proves nothing. Either way you get a bigger plant, not a dead one.
Care
Plant it at the back with 25–30 cm of room, roots buried and the crown at substrate level, then stop moving it — every relocation buys another melt. Hard, alkaline water is the condition, not a preference: pH 7–8, KH from 7 °dKH, GH from roughly 8 °dGH. In soft acidic water it does not die, it simply stays the size you bought. Low light keeps it alive, but medium light plus root tabs renewed every 2–3 months is what produces the bronze top, the red undersides and the half-metre leaves. CO2 is not required; a low dose speeds the recovery after the planting melt.
Diet
A root feeder first and last: a nutritive substrate or root tablets pushed under the rhizome, renewed every 2–3 months, is what prevents the avoidable melt on a plant carrying half-metre leaves. Iron and a full trace mix in the water column deepen the bronze and red; without them it grows on, just green.
