About
Cryptocoryne beckettii is a hard-water crypt from Sri Lanka and one of the more forgiving members of the genus — but the plant in the pot is not yet the plant in the catalogue photo. A settled specimen builds a compact midground rosette of ovate-lanceolate blades, rounded at the base and finely fluted along the edge, dark olive-brown above with a violet-tinted underside; the petchii-type stock most shops sell settles at 10-20 cm, while the full species can reach about 30 cm. Tropica says plainly that leaf colour and shape depend largely on conditions in the tank, so read the photo as conditional rather than promised. In weak light this crypt does not stunt, it stretches: longer petioles, a taller and looser rosette, plain green leaves instead of the brown you paid for. The short, dense, red-brown form wants light nearer the top of its 15-60 PAR range than the bottom, with iron and a full trace mix behind it. Starve the roots and there is a third way to be disappointed, easy to miss because nothing dramatic happens: new leaves come up small and pale and simply stay that way. CO2 is not required and the plant grows readily without any, but Flowgrow lists a CO2 range of 5-40 mg/l and both Flowgrow and Aquasabi record that it responds to injection — so 'no CO2' here means 'will live', not 'gains nothing'. Expect one melt after planting, because almost all stock is grown emersed: leaves soften and dissolve, sometimes overnight, occasionally leaving nothing but rhizome. That is a leaf exchange, not a disease. Cut the mush off at the base, hold the parameters steady, and leave the rhizome in the substrate — tank-adapted leaves return in three to four weeks. Two planting mistakes prevent that recovery. The first is depth: roots and rhizome belong under the surface, but the crown the leaves emerge from must sit level with it, because a buried crown rots instead of resprouting, and a rotted crown does not come back the way a melted leaf does. The second is disturbance — repeated uprooting is the only thing that reliably kills this plant, which pulls itself deeper with contractile roots and resents being lifted. A second melt months later is usually not a mystery either: an abrupt jump in pH, KH or temperature after a large water change with unlike water, a sudden change in light intensity or photoperiod, and both nutrient starvation and overdosing all trigger the same leaf drop. Growth rate is contested. Flowgrow, Aquasabi and Tropica all publish medium; Dennerle's own pot label says slow. This profile follows the majority, but that rating describes an established plant — for the first month after planting the honest expectation is nothing visible above the substrate at all. Separating it from its relatives by leaf alone is genuinely unreliable: botanists needed twelve years and a fresh collection to work out that C. beckettii, C. wendtii and C. undulata were growing intermixed in one Florida river, and the certain character is the spathe, which opens only on emersed plants. So buy by size class, which is the one thing you can check standing at the shop tank. C. usteriana (about 70 cm, heavily quilted) and C. crispatula 'Balansae' (about 60 cm, strap-like) are background plants you cannot mistake for this; C. parva is the 6 cm foreground dwarf. Beckettii, wendtii and undulata are all 20-30 cm midground rosettes that will do the same job in the same spot, so the choice between them matters far less than the labels suggest. As tendencies only: beckettii's ripple is fine and shallow, undulata's is stronger and more ruffled on a narrower, more pointed leaf, and wendtii is broader, more puckered and far more colour-variable. What does matter on the shelf is that C. petchii is the same plant — its triploid form — so do not buy both under two names. 'Petchii Pink' is a slow in-vitro selection; 'Viridifolia' is the plain green one. 'Pink Panther' is not beckettii at all: it is C. wendtii 'Flamingo', and it wants medium light and CO2.
Care
Plant roots and rhizome into a nutritive substrate with a root tab, but leave the crown the leaves grow from level with the surface — a buried crown rots rather than resprouting. Set small portions 3-5 cm apart, then stop touching it: repeated uprooting is the only thing that reliably kills it. It survives low light with no CO2, but that buys a taller, looser, plain green plant; the short brown rosette in the photo needs light nearer the top of its range plus iron and traces, and it responds to CO2 without requiring it. It takes hard alkaline water well (KH to 18, pH to 8). A melt in the first weeks is normal: trim at the base, hold pH, KH and temperature steady, wait 3-4 weeks.
Diet
A root feeder above all: a root tab or nutritive base under the rhizome does more than anything dosed into the water. It grows unfertilised, just more slowly and with smaller, paler leaves that stay small — and it is iron plus a full trace mix that deepens the olive-brown top and the violet underside. Flowgrow's published bands for a well-fed plant are NO3 10-50 mg/l, PO4 0,1-3 mg/l, K 5-30 mg/l and Fe 0,01-0,5 mg/l.
