Balansae Crypt
Cryptocoryne crispatula
Araceae

About
The balansae crypt is a tall background rosette plant from the limestone streams and rivers of Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, where it grows in harder, alkaline water. It is prized for its long, ribbon-like leaves with a heavily puckered, bullate texture that sways gracefully in the current. Given room and a nutrient-rich substrate it forms a lush green backdrop and slowly spreads by runners into a dense thicket.
Care
Root it in a nutrient substrate with root tabs, keep the water on the harder, alkaline side, and leave it undisturbed to avoid melt. Low to moderate light is enough; CO2 is optional but improves leaf texture.
Diet
A heavy root feeder that draws most of its nutrition from the substrate; supply root tabs or aqua-soil plus some column dosing, and provide calcium to prevent twisted, deformed leaves.
